The Challenge: A DIY Enthusiast Confronts a Hidden Structural Issue

Kelly T. lives alone in the same Nettleton, MS home he grew up in—one lovingly passed down from his mother. A passionate DIYer and avid video game enthusiast, Kelly originally planned to handle most of a major floor repair himself. He asked us to remove the subfloor and floor joists in his living room so he could install the new flooring system on his own.

However, after a thorough walk-through and discussion about the limited crawlspace clearance, Kelly recognized the risks and difficulty of the project. He ultimately decided to trust our team to handle the full repair professionally—and safely.

Solution

The Solution: Structural Floor Replacement and Crawlspace Support

The scope of our work involved removing and replacing a 13' x 13' section of subfloor and joists in the living room. Per Kelly's request, we used 3/4" subflooring and upgraded to 2x8 joists, replacing the existing 2x6s to provide greater support and longevity.

To reinforce the load-bearing wall between the living room and bathroom, we also installed:

A 12-foot structural beam
3 SmartJacks for permanent stabilization
Proper cross bracing between joists to reduce bounce and increase floor strength

From the beginning, Kelly understood this wasn’t about achieving visual perfection—it was about long-term functionality and safety. His goal was a floor that would be level and solid underfoot, matching the rest of the living room.

Kelly was present for the start of the project, wanting to see the condition of the substructure himself. As expected in an older home, we uncovered areas of rot and wood damage that weren’t visible during the initial inspection. Thanks to Kelly’s forward-thinking mindset and flexibility, he was fully prepared to expand the project scope and ensure all compromised areas were properly addressed.

With no plans to sell his cherished family home anytime soon, Kelly is investing in its longevity—including future plans to build a garage. This structural repair was a vital first step in that journey, giving him a safer, more stable foundation for years to come.
