Why Waterproofing Paint Does Not Work

Many people believe in the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) method to keeping basements, crawl spaces, and foundations free from cracks, leaks, and mold.

When it comes to waterproofing, people have attempted to use waterproofing paint in their basement. This method is an easy-to-use, inexpensive paint. It coats the walls with a barrier that is meant to hold back water and moisture. Unfortunately, this waterproof paint is not effective for several reasons:

-          It’s just paint. These paints are just thicker versions of paint you would use on shutters or kitchen walls. Although the paint does protect wood and other vulnerable surfaces, it does not protect against exterior dampness.

-          Seepage can still happen. Applying a coat or coats of waterproofing paint to the inside of your basement will not stop the continued seepage of water, such as through cracks or pourous masonry.

-          Mold will grow. Because the paint is enveloping the moisture, there is a greater chance of mold growing.

-          Hard to apply. First you must remove any loose concrete, dirt, and mineral deposits with a wire brush, then vacuum residue from the wall surfaces. You also must fill cracks and leaks. Then, you must meticulously paint each coat.

Using paint may seem like a quick solution to waterproofing a basement, but it does not resolve this issue for a long period of time. Purchasing a can of paint may seem like an easier, less expensive solution to your basement waterproofing. However, over time this paint will wear away and the issue will worsen. Instead of doing this, give Redeemers Group a call and schedule a free estimate. We have several solutions to your waterproofing needs.
