Top 5 Reasons to Waterproof Your Basement

Friday, November 2nd, 2012 by Clint Cooper

Your basement can provide valuable “healthy” space. In this day and age, we all have “stuff” in our lives. How many times have you driven past one of those huge storage facilities, only to think, “Wow, wouldn’t it be great to have extra space?” We all have the overflow of “stuff” in our lives to make living more comfortable; we just tend to crowd our livable space with all of it.

Many of us have the extra space we need to store our things, however, we cannot use that space because our space is in our basement, which is smelly, moldy, and wet. Who wants to put their stuff in a damp, moldy and smelly place? So, what is the alternative? Of course, we think that we need to rent the “extra” space! Why not look into cleaning up your own space to make it a waterproofed storage area and even livable space? Think of the money you can save by using your own basement.

Waterproofing for storage is just one of the reasons to clean up that basement. What about waterproofing the space for health reasons? Did you know that the air from your basement actually rises into your living space and can make you sick? If the air in your basement smells musty and moldy, then chances are, it is. If it smells moldy, then the mold particles are present and they are in your living space on the main floors of your home. You may not “live” in the basement, but the air lives in your entire home.

You breathe basement air even when you are not in your basement space. Warm air rises from the basement through the home, and into your living space. Prolonged exposure to mold can actually cause serious breathing issues.

The damp air will actually cost you more money in the long run. Damp air takes more money to both cool and to heat. Your money is literally going “poof” into the air. Why pay more in energy costs when you can actually save money by making your home more energy efficient and healthier at the same time?

The Top 5 Reasons (to name a few) to Waterproof Your Basement:

5. Wet basements can make you sick.

4. Wet basements are wasted space.

3. Mold, Dust Mites, Rot, Smelly

2. Unfinished = higher heating and cooling bills

1. FINISHED= Extra Space for living!
